If there is one Carnival you head to this year, make it the Spicemas Carnival in Grenada!  Grenada Carnival is probably the number one cultural event on Grenada’s annual events calendar, Spicemas (affectionately named so due to the island’s renowned spice production) is not to be missed!

The Spicemas Grenada Carnival takes place throughout the Caribbean each summer but Grenada’s is one of the biggest and best and attracts visitors in their thousands. Spicemas is the perfect representation of Grenada’s culture, with soca and calypso music everywhere. Carnival Monday and Tuesday of this Grenada Carnival take place in August.

What to Expect At Spicemas Carnival Grenada

A veritable marathon of parties, parades and competitions, Grenada Carnival is filled with colour, music, and dancing. Things begin to take off during June & July each year when the annual soca monarch, calypso and steel band competitions take place, swiftly followed by the election of the carnival king and queen. Villages throughout the island buzz with special carnival events and parties as the excitement builds. As August arrives, the Spicemas agenda really hots up with the Sunday before Carnival Monday and Tuesday kicking things off in style.

The traditional Dimarche Gras event takes place on Sunday in St Georges, the perfect start to what is a marathon of celebration and the moment that the Calypso King is chosen. As the party extends into Monday morning, the traditional Devil Mas bands (jab-jab) emerge from the darkness to parade through the streets with their horned helmets, tarred bodies and little more. They dance grotesquely before disappearing as sunrise shines light onto carnival Monday and the J’Ouvert celebrations. J’Ouvert is a magnificent parade of colour, music and dance with the traditional and fancy Mas bands of each parish represented. Each group dances through the roads en route to St Georges from their respective villages, chanting and dancing with abandon. They are followed by modern calypso bands as well as the King and Queen of Carnival. Thousands then take to the streets to create the best light show on earth with glow sticks, neon lights, and reflective clothing and the biggest street party takes place.  Carnival Monday and Tuesday of this Grenada Carnival take place in August so why not plan ahead with SN Travel today.
