Rio Carnival 2025, Brazil
If you look at the bucket list for many people, chances are that heading to what is known as the biggest show on Earth is somewhere near the top of the list. The Rio Carnival is one of the biggest parties in the world and it is something that has to be seen and experienced to be believed. In fact, as many as 6 million people are thought to be at the carnival every year and of this figure 1.5 million are tourists.
Thinking about joining in the celebrations? Here are some of the things that you might want to know about Rio Carnival before you go there…..
When is Rio Carnival?
The Rio Carnival is held at the end of February/the beginning of March every single year. The date will change, as it coincides with Ash Wednesday (this is the last day when the party is most definitely over). If you are looking to enjoy the carnival then you are going to need to make travel plans around that time of year. The carnival is not just one day, rather it carries on from the Friday to the Tuesday (which is known as Fat Tuesday to those in the know). Rio Carnival 202 4 will begin on 9th February and end on 17th February.

The Sambadrome
One of the most eagerly anticipated parts of the entire Carnival has to be the Samba parade and with good reason. Throughout the parade there are over 3,000 people participating, the majority of which are from the local communities. For many of these people, they will have spent all year preparing for the carnival, working on their floats, their costumes and also their performances too.
Along with the parade there is also the Samba school competition, which is a ticketed event if you want to go and see it. There will be around 12 different Samba schools, all gathering in the Sambadrome and ready to take on one another, claiming the prestigious and much sought after championship title. Each of the schools present a theme and they showcase this using a team of musicians, Samba dances and floats too.
Street Parties
Another huge part of the Rio Carnival are street parties or Blocos that take part all over the city. On average, there will be around 587 street parties throughout the course of the carnival, which means that you are always going to be able to find somewhere to dance, to sing and to just let your hair down and have some fun.
The largest of all the Blocos is the Cordao Da Bola Prega, which is held on the Saturday night in the heart of the city. This particular gathering can draw as many as 1 million people, which makes for one huge party.
The only way that you can really understand what the Rio Carnival is about is to see it with your own eyes. So, why not grab your brightest clothes, dust off your party hat and get yourself to Rio, we can promise you that this is one party that you will never ever forget!

Trinidad Carnival: The World’s Greatest Street Party
The biggest cultural event in the Caribbean calendar, Trinidad Carnival transforms the sun-kissed island into a party-goers paradise. Any Trini will tell you that Carnival is a year-round project, but for the main events, visiting the week leading up to Lent will do the trick. Trucks packed to the hilt with speakers drive ahead of the crowds, throwing out high energy beats from steel pans, Soca bands and DJ’s. Each procession has its own theme reflected in the music and costumes of its participants, led by an elaborately decked out King and Queen. Whether you’re dancing to Calypso, originally sung to mock the pomp of the slave masters, or the Soca subculture native to Trinidad, you’ll be guaranteed to make plenty of new friends to ‘wine’ around the clock.
What To Expect At Trinidad Carnival
Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, cover your modesty with few feathers and step out sequinned to the gods to catch the official start of Carnival. Meaning ‘break of day’, J’Ouvert kicks off the pre-Lent celebrations around 4am on Monday morning. Skin-baring revellers shimmy through the streets until sunrise, coated in paint, oil and mud, before around 35,000 visitors descend and turn the Port of Spain into a chorus of colour. If you thought that the skimpy trunks or neon bikini in the back of your drawer would never see light of day: think again. Carnival is about confidence, and it’s imperative that all ages, body sizes and shapes celebrate and shake their thing, however revealing the garment. Trinidad Carnival is the friendliest 24 hour street party on earth, and you’ll find only body positivity here.

Trinidad Carnival Events

Trinidad Carnival isn’t just a big street party and parade, there are many other several events; from the humble limbo to Extempo song battles, Carnival has tonnes of competitions, and winning is the name of the game.
Panorama: The steel pan is Trinidad’s national instrument, honoured by the greatest steel band competition in the world. It’s held the Saturday before Carnival, and features 100 musicians drumming infectious hip winding rhythms.
Dimanche Gras: With costumes weighing up to 200lbs, the crown of costume King and Queen really is a heavyweight title. With lasers, light shows, and everything but the kitchen sink, the Sunday night competition is proof that when it comes to masquerade band leaders: bigger is better.
Calypso Monarch: Double up on Sunday night entertainment, as calypso contenders take on last year’s champion for the most revered title in Trinidad: Calypso Monarch.
The History of Trinidad Carnival
French plantation owners threw masquerades before fasting throughout Lent. Slaves were excluded so threw their own version known as ‘mas’, where the French tradition was mixed with other African, Asian and Arawak customs. That’s why Trinidad Carnival holds a reputation as the greatest: because of its multicultural influences. Now, ‘playing mas’ is all about taking part in dressing up and dancing through the streets.
Trinidad carnival is one of the biggest events in the Caribbean and many of the other Caribbean carnivals stem from this one. It’s an incredible experience and definitely one for the bucket list!
