The island of Barbados plays host to the Caribbean Festival of Arts each year, otherwise known as Carifesta, and promises a spectacular display of artists and artisans. Carifesta closely follows Crop Over and sees a gathering of over 23 Caribbean and Latin American nations showcasing a wide variety of art from film and music to folk traditions to theatre and dance. Traditional cuisine and beverages are available to sample and works of art from all over the Caribbean are on display.
Carifesta is based on the theme “Asserting our Culture, Celebrating Ourselves” and is all about the sense of heritage, community and common history shared by the Caribbean people. The event consists of three main parts – Caricom National Events. Signal Events with professional artists from the host country and the Creative Fringe with community lead events throughout Barbados. The Grand Market & Buyer’s Shopping Mall is a great place to visit during the ten-day event, designed to showcase the creative and cultural industries of the Caribbean. The festival also plays host to a star-studded line-up of performers in its series of Super Concerts.
