Which Caribbean Islands should you visit?
There are over 7,000 islands in the Caribbean so its not surprising that many people find it hard to know which one to go to! Each island is totally unique and has its own unique audience. To help you better understand what Caribbean holiday will best suit your travel style, below is the low down of what to expect from some of the most popular Caribbean islands…
St Lucia
A St Lucia holiday is great for couples as it has a very romantic feel with stunning landscapes and lots of luxurious accommodation. Although you could laze on the beach all day you would really be missing out on all the activities there are to experience. There is a drive through volcano where you will find sulphur springs and a mud bath that you can bathe in – it’s said to make you 10 years younger, which is always a bonus! You can also explore the rain forest to see animals like Mongoose and humming birds – or simply zip line over it! There’s also snorkelling, waters ports, hiking, street parties and waterfalls so plenty to keep you entertained day or night.
Jamaica
Holidays to Jamaica have really grown in popularity over the last few years and its the most popular Caribbean destination for our customers. Jamaica is well known for its liveliness and has a great nightlife as well as loads to do during the day. You can get your adrenaline going on a quad bike adventure, try bob sledding or whizz across the jungle on a zip line. Nature lovers will enjoy seeing crocodiles at Black River or spotting wild dolphins on a boat trip. There are plenty of opportunities for learning to cook Jamaican style – who doesn’t want to know how to make jerk chicken? There are relaxing activities too… sit back and enjoy beautiful scenery as you float down the Martha Brae River while your guide tells you about the area and its history – you can even buy drinks along the way. When the sun goes down Jamaica really comes alive with dancing on the beach and plenty of bars in which to try the local rum. Not to be missed: No holiday to Jamaica is complete without a night tour to Luminous Lagoon to see the natural glowing phenomenon of phosphorescence.
Tobago
Tobago is a nature lover’s paradise – there are no five star hotels on Tobago so if you are looking for a luxury Caribbean holiday head to St Lucia, Aruba or Barbados instead. Tobago has beautiful sandy beaches and it’s covered in rainforest. If you love diving or snorkelling then head to the spectacular Buccoo Reef where you will see lots of colourful reef fish, turtles and even giant manta rays. There are plenty of animals to spot in on your Tobago holiday including dolphins and an abundance of birdlife including parrots and frigates. You can combine your holiday in Tobago with a few days in Trinidad, which is just 2.5 hours away by ferry. Trinidad is best known for its huge carnival, which will take place 4-5 March 2019.
Aruba
If it’s a luxury Caribbean holiday you are looking for then head to the captivating island of Aruba. Divers will love Pedernales Wreck, which is a World War 2 tanker. If you want to get close to nature as well and get a bit of exercise in then go on a kayak or paddle boarding tour of the mangroves. If you need more excitement, a quad bike safari is a great way to see the sights.
Not to be missed: You can get a boat from Renaissance Aruba Resort to a private island called Renaissance Island (guests of the hotel can go free). Here you can enjoy a stunning beach with loads of friendly flamingos that will come up to you and eat out of the palm of your hand. This alone is enough reason to book a holiday to Aruba!
Dominican Republic
Dominican Republic is huge so it really does have something for everyone; families, couples, package holiday lovers and those that like to get off the beaten track. There is whale watching, zip lining, beautiful beaches and the Dominican Republic is also well-known for its golf courses. History buffs should head to the capital to see the colonial buildings and the seafront fortress, Castillo San Felipe. You can also take a ride on the cable car; at the top you will find a small version Rio’s open-armed Christ statue as well as the botanical gardens.
Not to be missed: Los Haitises National Park has rolling limestone hills, sink holes, secluded beaches, waterfalls, mangroves and caves – it’s not only beautiful but there so much wildlife to be seen as well.
Antigua
Looking for a chilled laid back relaxing Caribbean holiday? A holiday in Antigua will give you just that. It’s perfect for couples and families and also great for honeymoons. Besides stunning white sand beaches there are extensive opportunities for hiking (with easy trails as well as difficult ones) you can go up to the higher points of the island for panoramic views – try and see a sunset if you can. Watersports are popular; from snorkelling and kayaking boarding to sailing and scuba diving.
Not to be missed: A helicopter ride to see an active volcano spew out ash and steam.
Barbados
Barbados holidays are popular with honeymooners, destination weddings and couples. If you’re looking to splurge then head down to Lime Grove shopping mall Grove to shop for designer clothes, there are loads of trendy restaurants too so make sure you stay for lunch. Sport of any kind (and every kind!) is big in Barbados, whether that’s cricket, surfing, polo or golf. There are therefore many opportunities to watch professional sport live. To relax (you’re on holiday after all!) you can you can laze on beautiful beaches, swim with turtles and snorkel amongst the coral reef. Harrison’s Cave is also worth a visit.
Grenada
Grenada has loads to do but is also far enough away so it avoids the mass of tourists so you can experience unspoilt landscapes and plenty of nature. Grenada attracts couples, families and adventure lovers. There are many unique activities on Grenada like the under water sculpture park which consist of man-made sculptures that attract marine life – make sure you take an underwater camera! Discover a variety of impressive waterfalls on a rainforest trek and don’t miss river tubing!
